01 Market Thesis · Industry Dynamics

The soundstage bottleneck & the regional arbitrage solution

British film and high-end television are under severe structural strain. Central London and M25 soundstage dry hire has climbed to £16,500 per day, and that is before power, crew or equipment packages. For independent features, documentary series and mid-tier drama, conventional physical stage production has become hard to justify.

At the same time, European co-productions contend with fragmented workflows, rising travel costs and complex cross-border tax credit compliance. Traditional blue- and green-screen post-production cycles can extend delivery by 6 to 14 months, tying up investor capital and deferring commercial returns.

  1. I

    Pre-capitalised balance sheet

A wholly owned, debt-free equipment inventory of about £1M means zero debt service on primary cinema cameras, optics and LED processing.

  2. II

    Swansea & M4 regional arbitrage

On the South Wales M4 corridor, stage operations run up to 38% below Central London stage packages, while Soho post houses remain under 2.5 hours away.

  3. III

UK tax relief & Creative Wales support

Qualifying productions access the UK Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit (34% gross / about 25.5% net). Independent films can reach 39.75% net under the UK-wide Independent Film Tax Credit, and Creative Wales production funding can be layered on top.

  4. IV

    Final-pixel in-camera VFX

The 180° ROE BP2V2 volume captures visual effects in camera, with real-time parallax, photorealistic reflections and integrated dynamic lighting. This removes up to 80% of green-screen replacement work.

  5. V

    Private generative AI ingestion

On-premise fine-tuning clusters turn concept art and pre-visualisation into photorealistic real-time Unreal Engine 5.5 environments in hours, not months.

Arctos Films

Through an exclusive strategic operating alliance with Arctos Films (est. 1988, a relationship of 38 years), Media Lab houses a debt-free Tier-1 cinema fleet on permanent station.

This is a long-standing institutional relationship rather than a rental contract. Full inventory access spans ARRI, RED and Sony cinema systems; Cooke, Zeiss, Leica and Angénieux glass; and complete grip, lighting and rigging at any scale. Arctos optics and technology have served international productions including Tehran (Seasons 1 & 2, Apple TV+), Drops of God (Apple TV+), Rise (Disney+), Greek Salad (Prime Video) and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3.

05 AI Lab · Real-Time Workflows

Neural ingestion to in-camera execution

At Media Lab, AI is an engineering pipeline rather than a decorative concept. It connects pre-production directly to in-camera execution.

  1. 01

    Neural pre-visualisation & environment synthesis

Local fine-tuned diffusion models and 3D Gaussian Splatting turn director sketches and photographic references into volumetric Unreal Engine scenes within hours.

  2. 02

    Automated metadata & continuity

Lens focal length, T-stop, focus distance and timecode are bound to synthetic frame assets in real time, producing an automated script-supervisor ledger.

  3. 03

    Real-time LED set generation

Weather, haze, light and time of day are changed live from touchscreen director interfaces, so there are no costly stage resets.

  4. 04

    Neural finishing

Local high-throughput inference handles grain management, artefact-free de-flickering and multi-resolution delivery up to 8K DCI master archives.

Private by design

Fine-tuning and inference run on-premise. Client concept art, plates and performances stay inside the building. They are not uploaded to third-party model providers.

07 Financial Engineering · Production Arbitrage

Regional cost arbitrage & UK tax relief

Model your shoot. The calculator compares stage-day costs against a Central London benchmark and estimates the UK relief your production may qualify for.

Relief scheme
Central London—
Media Lab—
Indicative stage saving—
Indicative UK relief on Media Lab spend—
Indicative Media Lab stage & crew cost after relief—

Indicative only. This is not a quotation or tax advice. Assumptions: the London figure is a stage-package benchmark you can edit (dry hire reference £16,500/day before power, crew and kit). The Media Lab stage day is modelled at up to 38% below it. Crew cost uses your rate for both locations; regional savings on accommodation and travel are not modelled. Relief is estimated on Media Lab stage and crew spend at the selected net rate, capped at 80% qualifying expenditure. AVEC and IFTC are UK-wide, so the stage saving is the regional advantage; relief is shown to give a net cost. Eligibility depends on BFI certification and HMRC rules.

UK-wide · Film & HETV

Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit (AVEC)

34%gross ≈ 25.5%net

Replaces legacy film tax relief, with credit on UK qualifying production expenditure up to an 80% cap.

UK-wide · Independent film ≤ £15M

Independent Film Tax Credit (IFTC)

53%gross 39.75%net

Enhanced credit for independent features with budgets up to £15M that pass the BFI cultural test.

Welsh support

Creative Wales production funding

up to £500,000

Production funding for qualifying projects that base operations in Wales and use the local supply chain. Ffilm Cymru Wales and the BFI offer further development and co-financing for culturally significant work.

AVEC and IFTC are UK-wide HMRC reliefs. Creative Wales funding is separate, discretionary Welsh support. Media Lab’s in-house specialists guide productions through BFI certification and AVEC claims.

09 Leadership · The Resident Collective

Seventy years. Two founders. One vision.

Managing Director & Creative Executive

Georgios Dimitropoulos

More than two decades of international filmmaking, multi-camera broadcast direction and advanced technology architecture. He is a published academic author on AI ethics, so research-literate direction is built into the studio’s method.

Between the two founders sit seven decades of professional filmmaking, and that experience informs every production decision. Their fiction and non-fiction, broadcast and theatrical, science communication and experimental work has won more than 50 festival awards across four continents and does not fit a single genre.

Documentary excellence

Long-form documentary across environmental cinema, science communication, investigative journalism and institutional storytelling. Academic rigour translated into cinematic narrative is the defining signature.

Narrative cinema

A combined fiction filmography across short and feature formats, in competition and awarded internationally. Every commission inherits the same directorial authority, cinematographic language and editorial discipline.

The extended cinema family

Resident heads of department in every discipline. When a commission arrives, the team is already assembled.
